We register your business to collect sales tax in the states where you need it, obtain the permit (in New York, a Certificate of Authority) and file returns on each state's schedule. Registration — $130, returns — from $25.

Why sales tax can't wait

Sales tax is the state's money that a business collects from customers. If you didn't collect it, you still have to pay it — out of pocket.

01

Register before you sell

In New York, a Certificate of Authority must be obtained at least 20 days before you start selling taxable goods or services.

02

Other states may require it too

Large sales into another state can create an obligation to collect tax there, even without an office.

03

Zero returns are required

If a return isn't filed, the state charges a penalty even when there were no sales.

04

The rate depends on the address

Sales tax combines state and local rates — the right one has to be applied to each sale.

Sales tax FAQ

Do I need sales tax if I sell services?

It depends on the state: some tax only goods, others tax many services too (in New York, for example, some services are taxable). We'll check your state and what you sell.

Do I need a permit to collect sales tax?

Yes. Before you start selling, the business registers with the state and gets a sales tax permit (in New York it is called a Certificate of Authority). You cannot sell taxable goods or services without it.

I sell on Amazon. Do I need to register?

Marketplaces usually collect tax on their own sales, but you may need to register for other channels. We'll review how you sell.

What if I had no sales for a period?

You file a zero return — $25. Missing a return leads to a penalty even with no sales.
